Mainstream Cruising
Our Advisor's Take
MSC is the European answer to Royal Caribbean — huge ships, great for families, and genuinely strong in the Mediterranean where they know the ports inside out. The Yacht Club is the secret weapon: a private ship-within-a-ship with butler service and a dedicated restaurant that gives you a luxury experience at a fraction of what you would pay on Silversea. Just be aware the European service style is different from American lines — more relaxed, less scripted.

About MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises is the world’s largest privately-owned cruise company, founded in Naples in 1987 and still headquartered in Geneva under the Aponte family’s Mediterranean Shipping Company empire. What began as a modest Italian cruise line has grown into a global giant with 23 ships and counting, including some of the largest vessels afloat. The newest World Class ships — MSC World Europa and MSC World America — tip the scales at over 200,000 gross tons, carrying nearly 7,000 passengers across 22 decks divided into distinct themed districts.

The fleet spans five generations of ship classes, from the older Lirica-class vessels to the cutting-edge World Class. MSC’s Mediterranean DNA shows in the design: Swarovski crystal staircases, marble lobbies, Italian-designed interiors, and a dining programme that leans heavily on Mediterranean cuisine. The onboard atmosphere is distinctly European and cosmopolitan, with announcements in multiple languages and a guest mix that draws heavily from Italy, France, Germany, Spain, and the UK — though the line is aggressively expanding its American presence with MSC World America based in Miami.

For families, MSC is hard to beat on sheer scale of offering. Dedicated kids’ clubs, aquaparks with elaborate water slides, robotic rides, bumper cars, and expansive pool complexes mean children are thoroughly entertained. The real surprise, however, is the MSC Yacht Club — a private, luxury enclave available on 15 ships that operates as a self-contained ship-within-a-ship. Yacht Club guests get spacious suites, 24/7 butler service, a dedicated concierge, a private restaurant, an exclusive pool deck, and priority embarkation. It is a remarkably polished luxury product hidden inside a mainstream mega-ship, and it consistently over-delivers for the price.

MSC’s strongest itineraries remain in the Mediterranean, where the company’s home-turf advantage means excellent port knowledge and convenient embarkation points in Barcelona, Genoa, and Marseille. But the line now sails globally — Caribbean, Northern Europe, the Middle East, South America, and beyond. The pricing is competitive and the ships are young, making MSC particularly appealing to European families and value-conscious travellers who want big-ship entertainment, diverse dining, and a distinctly Continental cruise experience.
