Holland America Line

Holland America Line

Premium Cruising
Our Advisor's Take
Holland America is the line I recommend when clients want something more polished than mainstream but without the stiffness of ultra-luxury. The enrichment programmes — live music at B.B. King's Blues Club, BBC Earth documentaries, culinary demos — give the sea days real substance. It skews older, but that is part of the appeal: you will not find pool-deck DJs here.

About Holland America Line

Holland America Line has been sailing since 1873, making it one of the oldest names in cruising. Originally a Dutch transatlantic shipping company, the line has evolved into a premium cruise brand now owned by Carnival Corporation, operating a fleet of eleven mid-size ships across four classes. The newest Pinnacle Class vessels — Rotterdam, Nieuw Statendam, and Koningsdam — are the flagship trio, each carrying around 2,650 guests and featuring the full range of Holland America’s signature venues and dining options.

What sets Holland America apart in the crowded premium market is the emphasis on enrichment and live music. Every ship features dedicated music venues including Billboard Onboard, Rolling Stone Rock Room, and on Pinnacle Class ships, B.B. King’s Blues Club — real musicians playing real instruments nightly, not pre-recorded shows. The EXC (Exploration, Experience, Culture) programme brings destination experts, BBC Earth partnerships, and AFAR travel guides aboard to make port days more meaningful. Recent additions include live cooking demonstrations by the head chef and revamped culinary offerings through the Made Fresh Daily programme, with handmade pasta, fresh-baked baguettes, and regionally inspired dishes.

Dining across the fleet is notably strong for the premium segment, with five specialty restaurants on Pinnacle Class ships: Pinnacle Grill steakhouse, Canaletto for Italian, Tamarind for pan-Asian, Rudi’s Sel de Mer for French seafood, and Nami Sushi. The main dining room maintains a traditional two-sitting format, and the overall dress code leans smart casual — no formal nights in the old-fashioned sense, but guests do tend to make an effort for dinner.

Holland America’s sweet spot is the well-travelled, curious cruiser over 55 who values substance over spectacle. The line excels on longer itineraries — extended Caribbean voyages, in-depth Alaska seasons, Northern European explorations, and annual Grand Voyages that circumnavigate the globe. If you want a ship with genuine character, excellent live entertainment, and itineraries that prioritise time in port over time at the waterslide, Holland America remains one of the best choices in its class.
