AmaWaterways

River Cruising
Our Advisor's Take
AmaWaterways is the river line I recommend most often for active, food-loving couples. The onboard bikes, multiple excursion choices in every port, and the exceptional Chef's Table dining set them apart. And if your clients want something truly special, the AmaMagna on the Danube is a game-changer — nearly twice the width of a standard river ship, with space and dining options that rival boutique ocean vessels.

About AmaWaterways

AmaWaterways has earned its place at the top of the river cruise industry through a relentless focus on innovation and an understanding that today’s river cruisers want more than just a floating hotel. Co-founded by industry veterans Rudi Schreiner, Kristin Karst, and Jimmy Murphy, the line operates a fleet of 29 custom-designed ships across European rivers, the Mekong, the Nile, and — as of 2025 — Colombia’s Magdalena River. Each ship carries roughly 156 guests in an atmosphere that manages to be both refined and genuinely warm.

The hallmark of AmaWaterways is choice. In every port, guests select from multiple included excursions — a gentle guided city walk, an active bike ride through the countryside, or a special-interest experience like a cooking class or wine tasting. Onboard, the dining programme is equally flexible: the main restaurant, an intimate Chef’s Table experience, and a casual bistro all come included. Complimentary wine, beer, and soft drinks flow at every lunch and dinner, and the daily Sip and Sail cocktail hour adds a convivial touch. The fleet also carries complimentary bicycles for independent exploration ashore.

The standout vessel in the fleet is the AmaMagna, sailing the Danube. At 72 feet wide — nearly double the width of a standard European river ship — she offers cabin categories, public spaces, and a roster of dining venues that have no real parallel in river cruising. A sun deck with a pool, hot tub, pickleball court, and putting green transforms the top deck into something more commonly associated with an ocean ship. For clients who have done a river cruise before and want something elevated, the AmaMagna is a genuine differentiator.

AmaWaterways has also earned Green Award certification across its entire European fleet, reflecting a commitment to cleaner engines, waste reduction, and sustainable operations that resulted in roughly 30 percent less food waste after shifting from buffet to a la carte service at breakfast and lunch. With continued fleet expansion — including new ships for the Rhine, Danube, Mekong, and Douro through 2027 — AmaWaterways remains one of the most dynamic and consistently excellent river cruise lines operating today.
